讓人捧腹的英語(yǔ)文化陷阱~Turn the table 07.13

　　一位親戚和妻子失和到了要離婚的地步。幾天前接到親戚電話，說他們?cè)谧哌M(jìn)律師樓之前，先去求助于心理和婚姻問題專家。夫婦倆心平氣和地坐下來談了好多次，互相之間多了一份理解，少了一份猜疑、埋怨，結(jié)果化干戈為玉帛。說簡(jiǎn)單也簡(jiǎn)單，就這么拯救了這場(chǎng)婚姻。我打心眼里為他們高興，把這一消息告訴了同樣也認(rèn)識(shí)他們的一位美國(guó)朋友。這位朋友挺激動(dòng)的，連連說著“感謝上帝，感謝上帝”，她還補(bǔ)充了一句“He turned the table”。

　　這話讓我心里很不舒服，她是指我親戚動(dòng)粗嗎?我打抱不平說：“不會(huì)，不會(huì)，他很斯文，很有紳士風(fēng)度，不會(huì)以粗魯?shù)呐e動(dòng)壓制對(duì)方，不會(huì)以高壓讓對(duì)方屈從。” 結(jié)果，越說誰也聽不懂誰。看著我那一臉不快的表情，朋友突然茅塞頓開了，以另一種方法向我解釋。終于讓我明白，她是說我親戚“扭轉(zhuǎn)了局面”，那 “table”和我想到的“桌子”根本無關(guān)。

　　再說遠(yuǎn)一點(diǎn)， turn the tables (on someone)這個(gè)短語(yǔ)也和“桌子”沒什么關(guān)系，它的意思是to suddenly take a position of strength or advantage that was formerly held by someone else (反敗為勝，轉(zhuǎn)弱為強(qiáng))。例如： “She played badly in the first set, but then she turned the tables on her opponent and won the match. ”
