The Scotchman and the Robbers
A Scotchman was attacked by three highwaymen, and defended himself with great courage. After much difficulty, the robbers succeeded in overpowering him, and his pockets were searched. They expected, after such a severe struggle, to find a large sum of money; but were surprised to discover he had only a sixpence, and this was all the treasures he had been defending at the risk of his life. "Why, "said one of the rogues, "if he had had eightpence he would have killed the whole lot of us."

一個蘇格蘭人受到三個強盜的攔路襲擊,他極其勇敢地進行自衛,但是經過一番搏斗后,強盜們最終制服了他.他們搜查了他的口袋.強盜以為經歷了這么一場激烈的搏斗,在他身上一定會找到一大筆錢,然而他們卻驚奇地發現他只有一枚六便士硬幣,這就是他冒了生命危險來保衛的所有財產."啊唷!"其中一個強盜說,"如果他有八便士的話,他定會把我們統統殺死."
