伊索寓言4

　　The Traveler and His Dog旅行者和他的狗

　　A TRAVELER about to set out on a journey saw his Dog stand at the door stretching himself. He asked him sharply： “Why do you stand there gaping？ Everything is ready but you， so come with me instantly.” The Dog， wagging his tail， replied： “O， master！ I am quite ready； it is you for whom I am waiting.”

　　The loiterer often blames delay on his more active friend.

　　一個人打點好了行裝準備出發。這時，他看見他的狗仍站在門口打呵欠，便嚴厲地對它 說：“為什么你還站在那里打呵欠？一切準備妥當，只等你了，趕快跟我走吧！”狗搖著尾 巴回答說：“主人！我早就準備好了，我等你等得都打呵欠了。”

　　這是說有些人不檢點自己，還常常把過失歸咎于別人。

　　The Dog and the Shadow狗和自已的影子

　　A DOG， crossing a bridge over a stream with a piece of flesh in his mouth， saw his own shadow in the water and took it for that of another Dog， with a piece of meat double his own in size. He immediately let go of his own， and fiercely attacked the other Dog to get his larger piece from him. He thus lost both： that which he grasped at in the water， because it was a shadow； and his own， because the stream swept it away. 狗叼著肉渡過一條河。他看見水中自己的倒影，還以為是另一條狗叼著一塊更大的肉。 想到這里，他決定要去搶那塊更大的肉。于是，他撲到水中搶那塊更大的。結果，他兩塊肉 都沒得到，水中那塊本來就不存在，原有那塊又被河水沖走了。

　　這故事適用于貪婪的人。

　　The Mole and His Mother小鼴鼠和媽媽

　　A MOLE， a creature blind from birth， once said to his Mother： “I am sure than I can see， Mother！” In the desire to prove to him his mistake， his Mother placed before him a few grains of frankincense， and asked， “What is it？' The young Mole said， ”It is a pebble.“ His Mother exclaimed： ”My son， I am afraid that you are not only blind， but that you have lost your sense of smell. 傳說鼴鼠的眼睛是瞎的，可小鼴鼠卻對媽媽說他能看得見。媽想試驗他一下，便拿來一 小塊香噴噴的食物，放在他面前，并問他是什么。他說是一顆小石頭。母親說：“啊，不幸 的孩子，你不但眼睛看不見，連鼻子也沒用了。” 這故事是說，那些愛吹牛說大話的人，常常夸海口能做大事，卻在一些微不足道的事情 上暴露了本質。

　　The Herdsman and the Lost Bull牧人和丟失的牛

　　A HERDSMAN tending his flock in a forest lost a Bull-calf from the fold. After a long and fruitless search， he made a vow that， if he could only discover the thief who had stolen the Calf， he would offer a lamb in sacrifice to Hermes， Pan， and the Guardian Deities of the forest. Not long afterwards， as he ascended a small hillock， he saw at its foot a Lion feeding on the Calf. Terrified at the sight， he lifted his eyes and his hands to heaven， and said： “Just now I vowed to offer a lamb to the Guardian Deities of the forest if I could only find out who had robbed me； but now that I have discovered the thief， I would willingly add a full-grown Bull to the Calf I have lost， if I may only secure my own escape from him in safety.” 牧人在樹林中放牛，不幸丟失了一頭離群的小牛犢。他在樹林中到處尋找，一無所獲。 他發誓，只要能發現偷小牛犢的賊，他愿意供奉樹林守護神一只羊。過了一會兒，當他走上 小山丘時，忽然看見山下有只獅子正在吃他的小牛犢。他嚇得舉起雙手，仰望著天空，向天 祈求說：“我剛發誓，如果捉到偷牛犢的賊，我愿供奉一只羊給樹林守護神。現在那賊已發 現，我愿意失去那只小牛犢，并再添上一只大牛，只要我自己能安全逃離獅子。”

　　這是說，有些人在強大的敵人面前嚇破了膽，忘掉了自己的誓言。

　　The Hare and the Tortoise烏龜與兔

　　A HARE one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise， who replied， laughing： “Though you be swift as the wind， I will beat you in a race.” The Hare， believing her assertion to be simply impossible， assented to the proposal； and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal. On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortoise never for a moment stopped， but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare， lying down by the wayside， fell fast asleep. At last waking up， and moving as fast as he could， he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal， and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue. Slow but steady wins the race. 烏龜與兔為他們倆誰跑得快而爭論不休。于是，他們定好了比賽的時間和地點。比賽一 開始，兔覺得自己是天生的飛毛腿，跑得快，對比賽掉以輕心，躺在路旁睡著了。烏龜深知 自己走得慢，毫不氣餒，不停地朝前奔跑。結果，烏龜超過了睡熟了的兔子，奪得了勝利的 獎品。

　　這故事說明，奮發圖強的弱者也能戰勝驕傲自滿的強者。
