永明大師的真名是延壽，他圓寂后，朝廷追授他為智覺公。因為他住在杭州的永明寺里，人們還是習慣稱他永明大師。

永明大師出家前，俗姓王。二十幾歲的時候，他在杭州附近的余杭縣當官，管理財政。他很同情那些被抓來吃掉的魚蝦，所以有時他就從財庫中拿出錢來買魚蝦，然后把它們帶到岸邊放生。
