to curb french expansionism under louis Ⅹ Ⅳ , england, the dutch republic, the holy roman empire and the duchy of savoy formed a grand alliance against france in 1701. in 1704, louis sought to knock the holy roman empire out of the alliance by capturing its capital, vienna, but his army was intercepted by a combination of english and savoyard forces. the french were defeated at the battle of blenheim, which led to an end of french hegemony over europe.
when news was brought to louis of the french army's brutal defeat, he cried, "how could god do this to me, after all that i have done for him!"
