us general george patton （ 1885-1945 ） was noted for his ruthlessness and tactical brilliance. after the normandy invasion in june 1944, he was leading the third army's rapid drive through france to western germany when he received a message from headquarters ordering him to by-pass trier as it would take four divisions to capture the city.
patton replied, "have taken trier with two divisions. do you want me to give it back?"
