in the early 17th century, bohemia was torn between the protestants and the roman catholics, who enjoyed the king's support. in 1617, the catholics ordered the cessation of construction of some protestant chapels. the protestants were so enraged that, on 23 may 1618, while the king was absent from bohemia, they trooped into prague castle, seized the two regents, and threw them as well as their secretary out a window, intending to kill them.
martinitz, one of the two regents, cried as he was thrown out, "jesus! mary!" "let's see," said someone mockingly, "if his mary will help him." a moment later he added, "by god, his mary has helped him!"
