趣味英語：比石家莊還囧的幾個(gè)美國地名
前一陣子有不少人議論石家莊要不要改名，堅(jiān)持要該的理由之一就是這個(gè)“莊”字有點(diǎn)土，與這個(gè)與首都為鄰的省會大都市的地位很不相稱翻成英語是village，撐死了也就是個(gè)town。這讓我想起在美國的一些towns的名字其實(shí)也很囧，比我們石家那個(gè)莊子有過之而無不及。
比如猶他州中部有個(gè)小鎮(zhèn)叫fillmore，聽上去就像在麥當(dāng)勞加點(diǎn)可樂或者加油站再多加點(diǎn)油fill more。密執(zhí)根州有一個(gè)地方叫maybee，聽起來就是maybe（也許）。這不是個(gè)大地方，你開車可能都找不著，你跟人家打聽到“也許”還有多遠(yuǎn)，對方如果知道，就會說“‘也許’10英里”。
紐約州有個(gè)鎮(zhèn)名叫flushing， flush在英語中的本意是“沖水”，加上ing成為現(xiàn)在分詞，所以flushing聽上去像是“沖啊”，和國內(nèi)某些廁所內(nèi)的標(biāo)語意思差不多了。這個(gè)“沖啊”的地名還不止一個(gè)，密執(zhí)根州也有個(gè)鎮(zhèn)子叫flushing。同樣使用現(xiàn)代分詞作地名的還有俄勒岡的boring，煩著呢。
光是boring還不算什么，最不幸的地方是密執(zhí)根的小鎮(zhèn)hell，與地獄hell拼寫完全相同。關(guān)于這個(gè)倒霉名字的來歷，“地獄”人自己有個(gè)說法，據(jù)說很久很久以前，這個(gè)小鎮(zhèn)之父（所謂founding father）建議用他的名字為這個(gè)城市命名，就像美國國父華盛頓的名字成為首都那么風(fēng)光。不料當(dāng)?shù)劓?zhèn)民聽了齊聲喊no，結(jié)果那個(gè)“之父”生氣了： then call it hell（那就叫“地獄”吧）！不知道hell在哪里，google一下，你就知道。
