after killing the local tyrant zhen guanxi, for fear of being jailed, lu zhishen fled to mount wutai where he stayed in a temple as a monk. after breaking the temple rules by drinking, he was sent by the abbot（大寺院男主持） to the monastery of great assistance to state, where he was put in charge of a vegetable garden. the property had been plagued（困擾，折磨） by a band of local hooligans（小流氓） who frequently came to steal. none of the previous watchmen could stop the theft. now, on hearing that a new watchman had been employed, the hooligans came again, only to be welcomed by a good beating: the two leaders were kicked into a manure（肥料，糞池） pit and the rest dropped to their knees and kowtowed（叩頭） for mercy.
魯智深打死惡霸鎮關西后，怕吃官司，逃往他低。他先來到五臺山文殊院出家，因不守佛規，喝酒鬧事，方丈又把他介紹到大相國寺看菜園子。菜園子附近住著二、三十個潑皮，他們常來菜園子偷菜，已換了幾個看園子的人都管不了他們。這次聽說有換了個新人，便來鬧事，沒想到被魯智深把兩個領頭的踢到糞坑里，嚇得他們跪地求饒。
