in 1945, an american intelligence team parachuted into the jungles of vietnam to help a band of guerrillas fighting the japanese. they found the guerrillas' leader, ho chi minh, seriously ill from malaria and dysentery."this man doesn't have long for this world," exclaimed the team medic, but he successfully nursed him back to health. the grateful leader agreed to provide intelligence and to rescue any downed american pilots he could find in return for ammunition and weapons.the following year ho chi minh pleaded with president truman to support his movement to gain independence from the french, but to no avail. from 1964 to 1975, 60,000 americans died in the vietnam war, battling a former ally whose life the us once saved.
