手足之情
The defence of Hougoumont by a British brigade at the Battle of Waterloo witnessed many courageous acts. The Duke of Wellington wrote after the battle:"No troops could have held Hougoumont but the British, and only the best of them." Among those"best soldiers", Sergeant James Graham stood out as being exceptional.But in the thick of the fight, Graham asked permission of his commanding officer to retire for a moment. The officer replied,"By all means, Graham; but I wonder you should ask leave now." Graham answered,"I would not, sir, only my brother is wounded and he is in that barn there, which has just caught fire." He ran to the blazing spot, lifted up his brother, and laid him in a ditch. Then he was back at his post, and was plying his musket against the French again.
滑鐵盧戰役之中，一旅英軍扼守霍高蒙特農莊，英勇非常。戰后，威靈頓公爵寫道：「除了英軍，沒有軍隊守得住霍高蒙特，而且還要最精銳的英軍?！埂缸罹J的英軍」之中，詹姆斯．格雷厄姆中士表現尤其出色。但是，戰斗最激烈的時候，格雷厄姆卻請求指揮官準許他暫時退下。指揮官說：「沒問題，格雷厄姆。我只是奇怪你怎么這個時候要退下去。」格雷厄姆回答：「我不想這樣，但我弟弟受了傷，在那邊的谷倉里，而谷倉剛剛著火?！顾艿交饒?，把弟弟抱起，放進壕溝里，馬上返回岡位，拿起毛瑟槍，繼續向法軍開火。
