        The Wolf who grew good

        閱讀 :

Long, long ago there lived a wolf who was always hungry. When he was looking for food, he came out of the woods and prowled round the streets of a nearby city, and very often he stole something for his dinner. He knew the people were afraid of him, and that they wished he would leave their city alone.

One day the wolf was out walking in the forest, when he saw a man coming towards him-a man with a kind, gentle face, wearing a brown robe and sandals.

The wolf leapt forward, but suddenly he stopped short because the man spoke to him-and the wolf found that he could understand every word!

“Come here, Brother Wolf, and do not hurt Brother Francis.”

His voice was so gentle, that the wolf lay down at his feet.

“Brother Wolf, you have done harm, and people are cross with you, but if you are sorry and promise to be good, they will forgive you, and no one will hurt you.”

The wolf bowed his head and wagged his tail. Then the wolf put his paw into Francis' hand as a sign that he meant to make and keep a promise and after that he trotted into the city at Francis' side, just like a pet dog.

As they walked through the street streets of the city he heard his new friend tell the people that the wolf wanted to be good, and would be pleased if they would bring him some food.

So the wolf had a lovely meal, and ever afterwards made his home in the city. He went in and out of people's houses and everyone loved him, because he was kind and good. But the wolf always loved Francis best of all.
