Baby Jumbo
“Offah-Offah， where are you？” called mother elephant， as she pushed her huge trunk through the thick bushes and long grass.
“Here I am， Mummy，” answered the little elephant who was just a few yards away.
“Then keep quite close to me， and do not wander away， or a tiger may catch you； or the men who hunt elephants in these parts.”
Offah came up to his mummy， with his mouth full of grass to let her see he could now find his own food. He wandered a tiny bit farther away from her each day. He was quite able to take care of himself， he thought.
One day， when he had wandered quite a long away from his mother， he saw the bushes moving. Offah thought there be some more baby elephants about， so he decided to go and make friends with them. But instead of finding elephants， he found a lot of natives！ With long bamboo rods they drove him away through the bushes and made him run faster and faster.
At last he came out of the brushwood. There were hundreds of natives now， but instead of killing him， they drove him into a big yard with bamboo fencing all round it.
“Oh dear， I do wish I had been a good little elephant， and stayed with my mother，” poor little Offah cried， and big tears rolled down his face.
Before the little elephant could stop crying his mother came running into the pen. She， too， had been caught by the natives； but nothing mattered to Offah now that he was with his mother again.
One day a gentleman came and bought Offah and his mother for his circus. Here they were both taught to do all kinds of tricks， such as sitting on tubs， doing handstands， and dancing in time to music. But Offah always did just what mother told him to do. He was so glad they were together - and so very happy in the circus.
