古德明英語軍事小故事：斯巴達式回答(中英對照)

alexander the great, having conquered much of the known world, wanted his subjects to worship him as a god. most greek cities complied, often erecting temples in his honour.
sparta resisted, however, prompting alexander to send envoys to obtain its obeisance. “ if alexander wishes to be a god, ” the spartans replied, “ let him become one. ”
亞歷山大大帝征服了當時所謂天下的大部份地區之后，要臣民對他禮拜如神。希臘多數城市望風承旨，紛紛為他建立生祠。
但斯巴達拒不從命。亞歷山大于是遣使要斯巴達人順從。他們回答說：「亞歷山大要做神，就叫他先變為神靈吧。」
【解說】馬其頓國王腓力二世是亞歷山大的父親。他也曾遣使到位在希臘南部拉可尼亞的斯巴達，要斯巴達稱臣，有國書說：if i enter laconia, i will raze sparta to the ground （ 如 果 拉 可 尼 亞 落 我 掌 中 ， 斯 巴 達 將 夷 為 平 地 ） 。 斯巴 達 的 回 信 只 有 一 個 字 ： if （ 如 果 ） 。
