The Swallow With One Wing
Once upon a time there was a baby swallow who had only one wing. She could not fly very far.
One day the swallows said:
“We must go away across the sea, for the days are growing cold.”
Then the swallow with one wing was very sad, for she could not fly hundreds of miles.
She could not live through the winter alone.
In the wood she saw some squirrels.
“Please may I live with you?” she asked.
“Can you crack nuts for us?” asked the squirrels.
“No,” said the swallow.
“Then you cannot live with us,” they replied.
The poor little bird walked on through the wood till she came to a fox.
“Please can I live with you?” said the swallow.
“Can you catch hens?” said the fox.
“No,” said the swallow.
“Then you are of no use to me,” said the fox.
So the swallow walked on and on, feeling very sad. No one wanted her. Suddenly she saw a door in the side of a hollow tree.
The swallow knocked on the door and Mr Rabbit came to answer it.
“Please,” said the swallow with one wing, “the other swallows have all flown away. Please can I live with you?”
“What can you do?” said Mr Rabbit.
“I am quite clever at keeping the house tidy,” said the swallow.
“Come in, then,” said Mr Rabbit. “That is just what we want!”
So the swallow with one wing kept house for the rabbit family and was very happy in their tree home.
And every winter she went back to them when the other swallows flew away to warmer lands.
