in 336 bc, alexander the great succeeded his father as king of macedonia and went on to execute his father's plans for freeing the greeks of asia minor from persian rule. he invaded the persian empire with 30,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry, defeating the persian king darius Ⅲ at the battle of issus.
