during the korean war, un soldiers captured by the chinese and north koreans were kept in appalling conditions in violation of the 1949 geneva convention. mo gwyther, an australian soldier, writes about his time as a pow:
"the chinese attempted to convert prisoners to communism. not one australian fell for this stuff. we were the first australians in any war to stand up to brain washing."
"we tried to escape, but were eventually caught. they put us in a little cell. we had to stand at attention, or sit with our legs outstretched, from 4:30 am till 11:00 pm. sometimes they beat us with their rifle butts until we were unconscious. we were starved, could only go to the lavatory once a day, and even then the guards decided the time, which was bad because we all had dysentery."
