hezekiah wyman turned 55 on 19 april 1775, the day the american revolution began. as he was getting ready for the war, his wife chided him by saying he was too old to fight. but he saddled his horse, and rode off.
wyman was a crack shot from years of hunting and skirmishing experience. the british came to dread the sight of this tall, gaunt man with long grey locks as time and again he would ride into range of the vanguard, jump off the horse, lay his long rifle across the saddle and squeeze off a deliberate shot at the advancing regulars. he kept dropping men with his attacks, remounting and riding off to a new position to do it again. he became a grim messenger of mortality, mounted on death's pale horse.
