Unit 4 Trouble with Propositions 介詞問(wèn)題

A new student was just finding his way around Harvard University.
一位哈佛大學(xué)新生正在熟悉校園環(huán)境。

“Excuse me,” he asked an upperclassman, “can you tell me where the library’ s at?”
“對(duì)不起，”他問(wèn)一位高年級(jí)學(xué)長(zhǎng)“，您能告訴我圖書(shū)館在哪里嗎？”

“What appalling diction,” sneered the older student. “I can’t imagine how you could have been admitted to Harvard. Don’t you know better than to end a sentence with a preposition.”
“好可怕的用字喔！”那名學(xué)長(zhǎng)嘲弄他道“。不知道你老弟是怎么獲準(zhǔn)進(jìn)入哈佛的。難道你不知道介詞不要放在一個(gè)句子后面嗎？”

“O. K. Can you tell me where the library’s at, asshole?”
“好吧！你能告訴我圖書(shū)館在哪里嗎，驢蛋？”

1.find one's way around+地方熟悉某地
例：You need a guide book to find your way around the Vatican.
熟悉梵蒂岡，你需要一本旅游指南。）

2.upperclassman n. 學(xué)長(zhǎng)；高年級(jí)學(xué)生

3.本文中“Can you tell me where the library's at?' ，為一錯(cuò)誤用法，因?yàn)?where 為地方副詞，不可當(dāng) at 介詞的賓語(yǔ)。正確說(shuō)法為"Can you tell me where the library is?"

4.appalling a. 嚇人的
appall vt.使驚嚇
例：The condition of this road is appalling.

sneer at... 嘲笑……

8.know better than to V 聰明得不會(huì)做 ……（不會(huì)笨得去……）
例：I know better than to ask him a favor when he's in this kind of mood.
（當(dāng)他是這種心情時(shí)，我不會(huì)傻得去求他幫忙。）

9.asshole n. 肛門(mén)；驢蛋
文中的新生故意在問(wèn)句句尾置此一詞，如此句尾就無(wú)介詞，但也罵了那位學(xué)長(zhǎng)，真是高明。
