萊，P. B.（Percy Bysshe Shelley，1792～1822）英國著名民主詩人。

出身鄉(xiāng)村地主家庭，20歲入牛津大學(xué)，因?qū)懛醋诮痰恼軐W(xué)論文被學(xué)校開除。

投身社會后，又因?qū)懺姼韫膭佑嗣窀锩爸С謵蹱柼m民族**動，而被迫于1818年遷居意大利。在意大利，他仍積極支持意大利人民的民族解放斗爭，1822年渡海遇風(fēng)暴不幸船沉溺死。

雪萊是跟拜倫齊名的歐洲著名浪漫主義詩人。其作品熱情而富哲理思辨，詩風(fēng)自由不羈，常任天上地下、時間空間、神怪精靈往來變幻馳騁，又慣用夢幻象征手法和遠(yuǎn)古神話題材。

最優(yōu)秀的作品有評論人間事物的長詩《仙后麥布》(1813)，描寫反封建起義的幻想性抒情故事詩《伊斯蘭的反叛》（1818），控訴曼徹斯特大屠殺的政治詩《暴政的行列》（1819），支持意大利民族解放斗爭的政治詩《自由頌》（1820），表現(xiàn)革命熱情及勝利信念的《西風(fēng)頌》（1819），以及取材于古希臘神話，表現(xiàn)人民反暴政勝利后瞻望空想社會主義前景的代表詩劇《解放了的普羅米修斯》（1819）等。

雪萊浪漫主義理想的終極目標(biāo)就是創(chuàng)造一個人人享有自由幸福的新世界。

他設(shè)想自己是日夜飛翔的夭使、飄浮藍(lán)空的云朵、翱翔太空的云雀，乃至深秋季節(jié)的西風(fēng)，是新世界理想的傳播者、歌頌者、號召者。他以美麗的語言、豐富的想象描繪了這個新世界的絢麗畫面，而且豪邁地預(yù)言：“如果冬天已經(jīng)來臨，春天還會遠(yuǎn)嗎？” 因此，恩格斯贊美雪菜是“天才的預(yù)言家”。

Percy Bysshe Shelley (August 4, 1792 – July 8, 1822), A nineteenth-century English poet; one of the leaders of romanticism. His poems include “To a Skylark,” “Ode to the West Wind,” and “Ozymandias.” Like John Keats, he died at an early age.

Percy Bysshe Shelley endures today as the great Promethean bard of the High Romantic period who is best remembered for extolling the sublime and affirming the possibility of transcendence.

Shelley's second wife, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, wrote Frankenstein.

　　①本詩構(gòu)思于佛羅倫薩附近阿爾諾河畔的一處樹林中，并基本上在那里寫成。那一天狂風(fēng)驟起，它溫暖又爽人，收盡了將傾瀉為秋雨的氤氳水汽。不出我所料，到了日落時分，暴風(fēng)雨開始了，起先夾有冰雹，還伴有阿爾卑斯山以南地區(qū)所特有的聲勢浩大的雷鳴電閃。——作者原注
　　又：本詩以五首十四行詩組成，但這些十四行詩的分節(jié)與韻式都受一種叫做tercarima的意大利詩體影響。
　　②巴亞灣因古羅馬時的溫泉療養(yǎng)勝地巴亞城而得名，即現(xiàn)在的波佐利灣(在那不勒斯灣西北部)。浮石是火山巖的一種，因為那不勒斯一帶都是火山區(qū)。
　　③據(jù)雪萊原注，“這種現(xiàn)象，是博物學(xué)家們熟知的。同陸上的植物一樣，江河海洋底下的植物的季節(jié)變化有著同樣的反應(yīng)，因此宣告這種變化的風(fēng)對之也有影響。

Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing,
Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red,
Pestilence-stricken multitudes:O thou
Who chariltest to their dark wintry bed

The winged seeds, where they lie cold and low,
Each like a corpse within its grave, until
Thine azure sister of the Spring shall blow

Her clarion o'er the dreaming earth, and fill
(Driving sweet buds like flocks to feed in air)
With living hues and odors plain and hill:

Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere;
Destroyer and presserver; hear, oh, hear!

Thou on whose stream, 'mid the steep sky's commotion,
Loose clouds like earth's decaying leaves are shedd,
Shook from the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean,

angels of rain and lightning:there are spread
On the blue su***ce of thine airy surge,
Like the bright hair uplifted from the head

Of some fierce Maenad, even from the dim verge
Of the horizon to the Zenith's height,
The locks of the approaching storm.Thou dirge

Of the dying year, to which this closing night
Will be the dome of a vast sepulchre,
Vaulted with all thy congregated might

Of vapoursr, from whose solid atmosphere
Black rain, and fire , and hail will burst :oh, hear!

Thou who didst waken from his summer dreams
The blue Mediterranean, where he lay,
Lulled by the coil of his crystalline streams
Beside a pumice isle in Baiae's bay,
And saw in sleep old palaces and fowers
Quivering within the eave's intenser day,

All overgrown with azure moss and flowers
So sweet, the sense faints picturing them!Thou
For whose path the Atlantic's level powers

Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below
The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear
The sapless foliage of the ocean, know

Thy voice, and suddenly grow gray with fear,
And tremble and esepoil themselves:oh, hear!

If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear;
If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee:
A wave to pant beneath thy power , and share

The impulse of thy strength, only less free
Than thou, O uncontrollable! If even
I were as im my boyhood, and could be

The comrade of thy wanderigs over Heaven,
As then, when to outstrip thy skiey speed
Scarce seem'd a vision; I would ne'er have striven

As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need.
Oh, lift me as a wave , a leaf, a cloud!
I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed!

A heavy weight of hours has chained and bowed
One too lke thee: tameless, and swift, and proud.

Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is:
What if my leavers are falling like its own!
The tmult of thy mighty harmonies

Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone,
Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce,
My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one!

Drive my dead thoughts over the universe
Like witheered leaves to quicken a new birth!
And , by the incantation of this verse,

Scatter, is from an unextinguished hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawakened earth

The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes , can Spring be far behind?
