在托福作文寫作中，一般遵循introduction- body-conclusion(導語段-主體段-定論段)的“三步曲”。Body(主體)時間供給了證明觀念的理由，是整個托福 寫作的主體，在評分中占有很大的比重。例如一篇滿分的托福作文有必要“presents a fully developed position in answer to the question with relevant, fully extended and well supported ideas”。這兒的“fully extended / well supported”，有必要經過主體段來表現。
