on 27 july 1830, the famed french historian jules michelet was lecturing at the ecole normale when his words were interrupted by the sounds of cannon fire in the distance, marking the start of the aptly named july revolution which ousted the autocratic charles x from power and ushered in the constitutional monarchy of louis philippe.
michelet turned to his excited students. "gentlemen, they are making history," he declared. "we shall write it."
