the battle of stalingrad was the bloodiest battle in history. as the germans advanced on the city in july 1942, stalin prevented civilians from leaving stalingrad. civilians, including women and children, were put to work building fortifications. a massive german air bombardment on 23 august caused a firestorm, killing thousands.
stalin also decreed that no commanders should order unauthorised retreats, or they would be court-martialled. as a result, the germans pushing forward into stalingrad suffered heavy casualties. fighting on mamayev kurgan was particularly merciless. in 1944 two bodies were exhumed atop the hill, one geman, one soviet, who had apparently killed each other by simultaneous bayonet impalement through the chests, and who had at that moment been buried by an exploding artillery shell.
