on 11 april 1917, soviet leader lenin called the us consul in switzerland, allen dulles, and told him that russia was contemplating withdrawing from world war Ⅰ and signing an armistice with germany.
dulles, who had a big date that evening, asked lenin to call back in the morning, when the office officially re-opened. lenin's message was never delivered to washington.
