aircraft were still a rarity at the outbreak of the first world war. when an enemy plane appeared in the sky, the soldiers on the ground would have a go at shooting it down with their rifles. most such attempts were in vain.
in august 1914, a column of the british expeditionary force was marching from maubeuge to mons when a german plane flew over them. immediately everyone began firing into the air. after a few moments puffs of smoke rose from the plane, and it crashed to the ground. the british soldiers cheered and broad smiles broke out on the faces of their officers. while they were celebrating their success, an old man in the tattered uniform of a french territorial soldier emerged from behind a nearby hedge, wiping his rifle carefully. as he passed by smiling, a british officer heard him mutter, “ not a bad shot, eh? ”
