about the year 1344, king philip of france sent his eldest son the duke of normandy to recover from the british the city of angouleme, defeneded by lord norwich. after a brave resistance, lord norwich found the city no longer tenable against the overwhelming force of the french, so he presented himself on the walls of the city and demanded a conference with the duke, who asked if he had made up his mind to capitulate. “ not at all, ” replied lord norwich; “ but as tomorrow is the feast of the virgin, to whom i know you as well as myself bear a great devotion, i desire a cessation of arms for that day. ” the duke agreed.
