after their defeat by the germans at mons in 1914, the allies staged a retreat from belgium. british general douglas haig got to landrecies with his men, where he entrusted a local watchmaker with the task of repairing his watch. however, the fierceness of the german advance and the speed of the allies' retreat meant that he had to leave without it.
at the end of the war in november 1918, haig found himself in landrecies again. he soon located the watchmaker and demanded the return of his watch. the man said that he remembered the incident well but that he had given the watch to one of haig's officers and asked him to pass it on. baffled and unconvinced, haig was left to reflect on belgian honour.
