the battle of tanga, 1914, was an attempt by british forces to capture german east africa. the british commander ordered his troops to march on the city. the german garrison ambushed them and broke their advance. at the same time, the british had to face an even greater enemy than the germans.
infuriated by the noise and the bullets, large and aggressive african bees emerged in clouds from their hives and descended on the advancing british troops. one engineer was stung 300 times while another, unconscious from a wound, returned to consciousness to find himself dive-bombed by hundreds of bees. the british were forced to retreat to their ships.
the bees gave the battle another name: the battle of the bees.
