in 1681, vienna was besieged by more than 100,000 turks. after several months of trying to starve the city into submission, the turks attempted to tunnel underneath the walls of the city. some bakers hard at work in the middle of the night heard the sounds of the turks digging. they alerted the city defenders, and the tunnel was blown up. soon, the king of poland arrived at the head of an army, and forced the turks to retreat.
to celebrate the end of the siege and the part they had played in lifting it, some bakers in vienna made a pastry in the shape of the crescents they had seen on the enemy's battle standards. in 1770, marie antoinette, a 15-year-old austrian princess, married king louis Ⅹ Ⅵ of france. to honour their new queen, the bakers in paris also made this crescent-shaped pastry, which they called by the french word for crescent, "croissant".
