造化
As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
像一位慈愛(ài)的母親，在夜幕來(lái)臨之際
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
牽著孩兒的手兒，領(lǐng)他上床歇息；
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
孩子半情愿半勉強(qiáng)，隨她而去，
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
邊走邊不住地望向后門(mén)外。
Still gazing at them through the open door,
摔壞的玩具放在地上，
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
盡管允諾給他買(mǎi)新的，
By promises of others in their stead,
還是不完全放心，不盡然滿(mǎn)意——
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
代替品雖好，他卻未必更喜歡。
So nature deals with us, and takes away
造化亦是如此，
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
將我們的玩具一個(gè)個(gè)拿走，
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
牽著手，溫柔地領(lǐng)我們?nèi)朊撸?/p>
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
于是我們?nèi)チ耍恢敢馀c否。
Being too full of sleep to understand
睡意朦朧，
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.
竟不知未知的勝過(guò)我們所知的有幾分。
