When asked to send something representative of their country to an international exhibition, most people tend to think of specific objects. However,I would send something completely different: one week’s worth of television programming. I feel that TV programs are a good representation of my country because they show how we live, what we value, and what we teach our children.

◎ 這個開始段寫得好，最大的特點是：清晰 ( clarity ).清晰的中心論點 (thesis statement ): one week’s worth of television programming.讓讀者一開始就了解文章的“統(tǒng)攝性 governing”的觀點。隨后，作者列舉了三個論點：展示了我們?nèi)绾紊?how we live)，我們珍視什么( what we value )，我們教孩子們什么( what we teach our children)。”萬事開頭難“，有了這個開始，這篇文章的”連貫 coherence”就有保證，讀者也就有了“沒有懸念的閱讀”，這正是托福獨立性寫作的核心：展示“三識“---知識( knowledge )，常識 ( common sense ) 和見識( insight )。事實上，ETS的評委并沒有一定要期待”驚世駭俗的論點“，觀點只要清楚，合理即可。下面，就是一個”自圓其說 。Convincing “的過程。

TV programs show how we live in my country. For example, they show the different ways we make our living. The different kinds of houses we live in, the different types of relationships we have, and the different sorts of activities that fill our days. In short, they give a broad representation of daily life in my country.

TV programs also show what we value in my country. Comedy programs, for instance, demonstrate what we think is funny, while documentaries show what issues we are concerned about and how we want to resolve them. Sports programs show which sports are more and less popular as well as how we approach competition. In general, the range of programs that appear on TV demonstrate what we think is important and interesting and worth our while to spend time on.

◎ 這一段寫作值得學(xué)習(xí)的是寫作手法和語言的表達(dá)。寫作手法來說，最主要的是對”value”的解釋，使用了”classification 分類“的方法：comedy, documentary and sports，選擇表現(xiàn)”價值“的這三個方面具有代表性，也是文章中心”電視“最主要的內(nèi)容。在語言寫作上： demonstrate what is funny; show what we concern and how we resolve; how we approach competition. 這幾組詞的動詞搭配和選擇非常”準(zhǔn)確 accurate”,符合語言“達(dá)”的層次。

Children’s programs show what we think is important to teach our children. Some programs are designed to specifically teach reading and math skills. Others expose children to classic stories from literature or to traditional folktales. And some programs, such as cartoons are simply meant to be enjoyed, which is also something we teach our children to do.

You can learn a good deal about a country by watching its television programs. You can learn about daily life, values, and education. That is why I would send a week’s worth of TV programs from my country to an international exhibition.
