Keeping Pets Is Disadvantageous
Keeping pets has become so prevalent a scene that in the morning or after dinner one may come across many people walking their dogs in the neighborhood. To them, pets offer a constant source of happiness and enchantment like cute companions. But I do not see eye to eye with this view because raising pets is characterized by several disadvantages.
As a waste of time and resources, it puts pet owners into a shame that these animals eat costly food while thousands of people go to bed hungry in backward regions of overpopulated countries and school-age children drop out of school owing to family poverty. In the past few years, the number of pet dogs has increased so rapidly inChinato have hit 100 million. The considerable amount of money in feeding and caring pets could have been spent more rationally, to be donated to the Project Hope for example. In addition, time consumed in taking care of pets is hard to measure, which could have otherwise been dedicated to meaningful endeavor or entertainment.
Furthermore, the growing number of pets has resulted in serious hygiene problems to both the owner and the general public. Asthma and allergy are often two factors in many parents’ decisions not to have a pet. Some studies suggest that cat or dog allergies can trigger an asthma attack. It has been reported that the doctor could not find any good reason for a child’s skin trouble until she came to learn that the child used to cling to the family pet dog. Pet dogs might be good friends to their owners, yet to innocent passers-by, they may be nightmares as a dog bite may lead to hydrophobia, a deadly disease.
Moreover, Chinese housing circumstances are not suitable for keeping a pet. Most Chinese citizens, unlike many westerners, reside in enclosed apartments where ventilation is sometimes a consideration. And a pet in such enclosed dwelling is more likely to pose health threat to occupants. If you do not believe it, try knocking at a door behind which there is a pet, you will feel sorry about the smell forcing into your nostril. Hence, we need to think twice before jumping at the decision of keeping a pet.
In conclusion, I am convinced that the disadvantages of keeping pets outweigh the advantages. Though it is not possible to forbid pets keeping once and for all, at least rules should be made to minimize its drawbacks.
