Chinese President Xi Jinping has called upon the country's best and brightest to make more breakthroughs in science and technology, with billions of yuan being pumped into higher education.
Now, it seems that an increasing amount of that money is going into scientists' pockets. According to a new report by South China Morning Post, the ranks of millionaire scientists in China are growing rapidly.
A survey published in the scientific journal Nature concluded that university scientists in China made on average $40,000 a year in 2010, while their counterparts in the U.S. made double that amount. Now, the gap is vanishing.
"In major cities, more and more Chinese scientists are making as much as they can for the same position in the U.S.," a senior life scientist at Tsinghua University in Beijing told the SCMP.
Chinese professors with overseas experience get an average starting salary of about $120,000 a year, it added. Additionally, some university researchers can get a $100,000 bonus for each paper published by top academic journals.
There's also commercial potential in the scientists' research. A professor at Wuhan Institute of Technology in Hubei reportedly earned $2 million from selling ceramic coating technology to a company last year.
These top earning scientists have, however, come under fire, with critics questioning whether their heart truly lay in science – or in their paychecks.

北京清華大學(xué)的一名高級(jí)生命科學(xué)家接受南華早報(bào)采訪(fǎng)時(shí)表示：“在中國(guó)各大主要城市，越來(lái)越多的中國(guó)科學(xué)家的收入已經(jīng)和美國(guó)科學(xué)家持平了。”
南華早報(bào)補(bǔ)充稱(chēng)，有海外留學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn)的中國(guó)教授起薪是每年12萬(wàn)美元。此外，在一些高校，如果論文發(fā)表在頂級(jí)學(xué)術(shù)期刊中，研究者還可獲得10萬(wàn)美元左右的獎(jiǎng)金。
而一些科學(xué)家的研究中還有很多商業(yè)價(jià)值。據(jù)報(bào)道，武漢科技大學(xué)的一名教授在去年就通過(guò)出售陶瓷涂層技術(shù)獲得了200萬(wàn)美元的收益。
不過(guò)，這些頂級(jí)科學(xué)家還是受到了批評(píng)，很多批評(píng)者質(zhì)疑他們是在專(zhuān)心做科研，還是在賺錢(qián)。
