Need not worry if you major in English. English is used in most countries around the world. It is an international language useful both socially and careerwise. China will need personnel wo are good in English because China recent prominence came from international trade and investments. The need for peoople profienct in English will go on for a long time to come. I also majored in English literature and I have no problem with my career using these qualifications. Every major will have it's place in the job market. It all depends on the market demand and economic situation.

agreed.  no pressure on this one as long as you trust your own abilities and work hard.  actually, talents with great english proficiency are in urgent need in the market, as far as i know.  and the pay is not bad, at all.
the most important is to determine on a career that you actually love wholeheartedly and are willing to dedicate yourself to it, and make sure it fits you as well.  at the end of the day, you will figure it out and make your own way in the world.

it seems many people believe in this popular belief. compared with other minor or rarely heard languages, the situation, i believe, is getting tough, for the simple reason that almost everyone knows some english. but the key is how well you know the language and if you can use it fuluently and naturally as a communicating tool. if the answer is, you don't need to worry at all.

I think the problem is that speaking a foreign language is never enough for employers! if you  want a good job you have to speak a foreign language but be specialised in something different! As for me, I can speak English and Chinese (I can speak and write fluently) but it seems that it's nothing if you want a career! that's really too bad, since I've focused for 6 years on studying Chinese for nothing...

Amazing ! I seldom come across foreigners who can write sensible Chinese . Although I do agree that apart from  language ability, you should get more knowledge of something, for example, of how to do international trade ,of  advertising or of  freelance journalism ...  I ,however ,think that the main issue likey  lies in your not good at  promoting your Chinese language ability ?

As you can read Chinese  ,even classical Chinese (?) ,why not write something on Chinese current affairs, medicine, Kungfu or culture, and broadcast them on the net ? There is a huge gap that needs smart person like you to fill.

Or,  try sending out your resume in several languages (Chinese ,English and Italian ?). When I apply for a job,   I always write   my resume in  more languages : say Japanese or French and send these different versions of it  in an email to the potential employers   . It works . Although  my expertise is mainly in the field of international marketing  , I think  likely such method also works in other industries..
